Profile: Gifty Osei Boakye Bingley, MCIPR


Gifty Osei Boakye Bingley is an outstanding Communications and Strategy Executive who has led successful campaigns for multi-national companies. She currently serves as the Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility at Tigo Ghana, a subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular SA.

Before Tigo, she managed the internal and external communications team and a PR agency at rival telecommunications company, Vodafone Ghana. Her association with Tigo made her the first female to lead the department. At Tigo, she is responsible for the company’s overall corporate communications and initiatives including internal and external engagements, and Corporate Responsibility.

Before joining the telecommunications industry, she worked at the British High Commission in Accra, where she was in charge of managing public diplomacy on a wide range of policy issues; including developing several bilateral projects aimed at strengthening state institutions and improving living standards across Ghana.

Gifty also spent a decade at Ghana’s leading television network, TV3, where she rose through the ranks from Broadcast Journalist to Head of News and Deputy Editor-Assignments, developing and managing content for the various news bulletins.

She is a trained journalist from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and also holds a double Masters Degrees in Political Communication from University of Leeds; and Development Management from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). In addition to this, she is an alumna and member of the Charted Institute of Public Relations, CIPR, UK.

Through her exemplary leadership skills, Gifty pioneered the set-up of the Corporate Communications and CSR department in Tigo – the first of its kind within Millicom Africa.

Saddled with the tough task of changing the perception of staff about the importance of PR for the Tigo brand, she was able to ensure that after assumption of the reins of leadership, the results of her leadership became evident. Due to the immediate impact recorded, the Millicom Group set-up Corporate Communications and CSR departments across its markets in Africa, using the Tigo Ghana as a blue print and case-study.

As a professional with local and international knowledge of PR principles and strategies, she developed ground-breaking CSR concepts which have resulted in a drastic increase in positive public perception for the Tigo brand.

Among these concepts are; Shelter 4 Education, Digital Change-Makers, Ghana’s first Mobile Digital Library, and Ghana’s first Automated Birth Registry. These concepts have led to the company being recognized at local and pan-Africa awards such as;

  • Best CSR Company of the Year and Social Impact Award at the 2015 and 2016 Ghana Telecom Awards respectively,
  • CSR Initiative/Campaign of the Year, CSR Award for Education, CSR Practitioner of the Year at the 2016 Ghana CSR Excellence Awards.
  • Additionally, Tigo’s Automated Birth Registry initiative won the Changing Lives awards at the 2016 AfricaCom Awards.

Gifty is a role model to many young professionals who seek to succeed in Ghana’s fledgling public relations industry. In 2014, she recognized by the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana as the Public Relations Discovery of the year.
